Who we are

Pete Edwards

Senior Programme Coach

What are your responsibilities with The Running Charity?

My main responsibility involves supporting young people to see their potential – regardless of the challenges they face – both through running and in life. I do it through the delivery of The Running Charity’s programmes and activities, using 1:1 and group sessions. This includes goal setting, youthwork sessions and liaising with partners. I also support volunteer recruitment, training and delivery.

What does your average day look like?

An average day begins by addressing any crisis that young people have faced the previous night and liaising with partners where necessary. Next, I do a general ring around to check young people are out of bed for their session. Then we run, run and run some more.

What would you say is your proudest achievement since working with us?

For me, there’s only one: supporting young people to not only achieve, but believe in themselves. The Running Charity provides an environment where young people can put their best foot forward, regardless of the challenges, and to say I helped do that is life changing.

What has been your best moment, personally?

They mount on a daily basis, for sure. But one standout moment has to be watching a young transman, who previously saw no value to his life, stand on stage in front of a hundred people and describe how proud he was of himself, his life and his Running Charity family.

When did you start running and why?

I started running with Charity five years ago, having not done it for 30 years before that. My intention was solely to encourage young people to run, not myself, but look how that turned out.

Why do you like working with young people?

Young people teach me something new every day.

Tell us about your favourite race or run?

It has to be the beautifully and brutal 75-mile Ultra Marathon on the Penn Llyn peninsula in North Wales.
