Steven’s Story: A life transformed by running
When Steven Oltay first joined The Running Charity he was malnourished. He weighed just seven stone, he was rough sleeping and drug dependent.
But Steven became a committed member of The Running Charity’s programme, building confidence, independence and fitness. At first he was timid with his peers and highly dependent on the staff and volunteers at the sessions. Now he is a healthy, independent, lively, confident and fighting fit young man.
Steven says that working with the Running Charity was the catalyst that helped him turn his life around and deal with the issues he faced. With a new focus on his health and a clearer mind, his self-esteem improved. As he built up his body to become a superb runner, often covering over 100 km per week, Steven also tackled the issues that were compounding his homelessness.
Steven has continued to be a supporter of The Running Charity, having run The London Marathon on behalf of the charity. Steven regularly gives his time to inspire other members of our work, and has spoken at events promoting running and the work that we do harnessing the power of running to make real social change.
“When I crossed that finish line I knew I could achieve anything!”
