Legacy of Toby Hayward-Seers
Toby Hayward-Seers was a warm, passionate young person and an active trade union member. He was committed to workers’ rights and international human rights throughout his short working life. Following a cardiac arrest whilst running the Barcelona Marathon in March 2023, he died peacefully in London on 28 April 2023, his 27th birthday. His funeral in his beloved Hackney, East London was attended by over 300 people with 200 watching online.
Resident in Hackney from 2020, Toby played football and ran regularly, taking part in many races including the London Marathon, the Beachy Head Marathon and the 250 mile team run ‘Border to Hell’. He ran frequently with his running club, Your Friendly Runners, as well as with friends and family. He worked at the University of East London and most recently at the trade union Bectu where he rapidly gained the respect of both members and staff. Many of his work colleagues have said his unwavering belief in creating a fairer and more inclusive society was an inspiration.
Toby was loved by many people, bringing them together with his calm, considerate manner and his love of food, music and sport. He enjoyed exploring new opportunities never missing the chance to share his discoveries with others. He is hugely missed by his parents, Peter and Mary, his brother and sister, Joseph and Ellen, his partner Celia, his three young nephews, and his many friends and work colleagues. He will continue to inspire those who he loved and empowered.
We are grateful to announce that The Running Charity has received a donation of £3,500, which represents a portion of the funds collected on a GoFundMe page set up in honour and celebration of Toby. This contribution will directly support the charity’s efforts to empower young people affected by homelessness and multiple disadvantages in London, a cause that resonates deeply with Toby’s spirit and values. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to this meaningful tribute to Toby’s memory.
