Do you believe running can change lives?
At The Running Charity, we support young people aged 16–25 who are facing homelessness or dealing with tough life challenges. We use running, coaching and kindness to help them build strength, confidence and hope for the future.
Behind that work is a small, committed organisation that needs to be financially resilient, well-governed and able to plan for the long term. That’s where this role comes in.
We’re looking for a Treasurer who wants to be part of that journey — someone who can provide robust financial oversight, ask the right questions, and help ensure the charity can continue to support young people now and in the future.
This role is best suited to someone who is a qualified accountant (e.g. ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) or has significant experience in a senior finance role, with responsibility for organisational finances, risk and strategic planning.
As Treasurer, you’ll work closely with the CEO and fellow Trustees to oversee budgets, financial reporting and long-term sustainability. You’ll help the Board understand the financial picture, balance ambition with responsibility, and make confident, informed decisions.
Whatever your route here, we’re looking for someone who brings integrity, sound judgement and a genuine belief that strong financial governance enables meaningful, lasting impact.
About The Running Charity
We’re the first organisation in the UK to use running as a tool to empower young people’s lives. Since 2012, we’ve supported thousands of young people across London, Manchester, Leeds and Brighton. This includes those facing homelessness and others navigating significant barriers like time in care, the criminal justice system, seeking asylum or refugee status, recovery from addiction, or experiences of discrimination based on race, sexuality, gender identity or background.
What you’ll be doing
As a key member of the Board, you’ll play a vital role in supporting the charity to be financially strong, well-governed and able to deliver life-changing work for young people.
You’ll:
- Act as the Board lead for financial oversight and governance
- Work closely with the CEO to review budgets, management accounts and cashflow
- Help the Board understand financial performance, risks and opportunities
- Support financial planning, reserves management and long-term sustainability
- Provide insight and constructive challenge on financial decision-making
- Oversee year-end accounts and liaise with external accountants or auditors
- Ensure appropriate financial controls, policies and procedures are in place
- Contribute fully to Board discussions as a Trustee, not just on finance
This is a strategic, non-executive role that helps ensure the charity can continue to put young people first.
Who we’re looking for
You don’t need prior charity Treasurer experience — we care more about sound judgement, clarity and a collaborative approach.
You will have:
- A recognised accountancy qualification (e.g. ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) or
- Significant experience in a senior finance role, with responsibility for organisational finances
You’ll also bring:
- The ability to interpret and clearly explain financial information to non-financial colleagues
- A calm, thoughtful and proportionate approach to risk
- Integrity, curiosity and confidence to ask the right questions
- A commitment to good governance and collective responsibility
- Alignment with the mission and values of The Running Charity
To apply
Send the following to info@therunningcharity.org

We strongly encourage applications from people who:
- Have lived experience of homelessness, the care system, the criminal justice system, migration, or mental health challenges
- Are from communities that are underrepresented on charity boards
- Bring diverse perspectives shaped by race, gender identity, sexuality, disability or socio-economic background
- May not see themselves as a “typical trustee”, but have insight, values and commitment to make a difference
