Do you believe running can change lives?
At The Running Charity, we support young people aged 16–25 who are facing homelessness or dealing with tough life challenges. We use running, coaching, and kindness to help them build strength, confidence, and hope for the future.
We’re looking for someone who wants to be part of that journey — someone who can show up consistently, build trust with young people, and bring positive energy to our work. As a Programme Coach, you’ll be delivering 1:1 and group sessions, supporting community activities, and helping young people move forward in life.
You might have experience in youth work, sport, mental health, or volunteering. Or you might bring personal insight from overcoming your own challenges. Whatever your route here, we welcome people who care deeply, want to help others, and believe in the power of movement and connection.
About The Running Charity
We’re the first organisation in the UK to use running as a tool to empower young people’s lives. Since 2012, we’ve supported thousands of young people across London, Manchester, Leeds and, now… Brighton! This includes those facing homelessness and others navigating significant barriers like time in care, the criminal justice system, seeking asylum or refugee status, recovery from addiction, or experiences of discrimination based on race, sexuality, gender identity or background.
We offer:
- One-to-one coaching and mentoring
- Group running sessions and personal goals
- Access to therapy, help with work or training, and qualifications
- A community where everyone belongs and feels valued
Our work is about more than running — it’s about connection, progress, and belief.
Our vision for Brighton
With support from the London Marathon Foundation, Brighton is a key area for us. We want to:
- Support young people through consistent, empowering coaching
- Build strong local partnerships with youth services, hostels and mental health providers
- Engage the local running community to give back through volunteering and fundraising
As Programme Coach, you’ll be working closely with the Senior Programme Coach and playing a central role in our Brighton growth story.
What you’ll be doing
As a key member of the Brighton team, you’ll be working directly with young people and helping shape the day-to-day delivery of our programme.
You’ll:
- Plan and run 1:1 and group sessions with young people
- Build real, trusting relationships with those going through housing, mental health, or life challenges
- Support regular running sessions and community events
- Help young people participate in local fundraising initiatives
- Keep clear records of your sessions and progress
- Connect with local partners (e.g. housing, health or youth services)
- Support the safety and wellbeing of every young person you work with
- Attend regular training, team meetings, and reflective practice sessions
This is a hands-on delivery role that puts young people first and creates space for them to grow.
Who we’re looking for
You don’t need to tick every box, we care more about how you work than where you’ve worked.
You might have:
- Experience supporting young people facing challenges
- A calm, consistent and resilient approach
- Experience running group activities, fitness sessions, or coaching
- The ability to build strong relationships and hold safe boundaries
- A love of movement, physical activity, or just being outdoors
- The willingness to learn, reflect and grow as part of a team
Bonus if you also have:
- A youth work, coaching, or mental health qualification
- Lived experience of the challenges our young people face
- Knowledge of Brighton’s local youth or housing networks
- Experience organising community events or fundraising
- Familiarity with safeguarding, reporting or digital tools
What success looks like (after 6 months)
- You’ve built strong, trusting relationships with young people
- You’ve been delivering consistent weekly sessions with real impact
- You’ve supported a local fundraising event or celebration
- You’ve maintained strong safeguarding and admin standards
- You’ve been an active and positive part of the team
We’re an inclusive employer
We warmly welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, ages and professional experience. The Charity especially values those who have lived through similar experiences to the young people we support. If you need any adjustments to the application or interview process, just let us know.
What you’ll get
- £24,000–£27,000 salary
- 25 days holiday + bank holidays + extra shut down days
- Flexible hours and hybrid working
- Reflective practice and access to counselling
- Training and development budget
- A caring team that believes in what we do
